Measure your footprint firstCut heating demand before changing the heat source
Heating is usually the single largest line in a UK household footprint. Draught-proofing, loft insulation, cylinder and pipe insulation and lower flow temperatures reduce demand cheaply, and they make any future heat pump smaller, quieter and cheaper to run.
Address the highest-mileage car
Emissions scale with miles, so the biggest wins come from the vehicle doing the most driving. Combining trips, switching short journeys to walking, cycling or public transport, and making the next replacement electric all move the number materially.
Reconsider the flights
A single long-haul return can rival a year of home heating. Fewer, longer trips and choosing rail for European journeys are the two changes with the clearest effect.
Shift the balance of your diet
Reducing beef and lamb, and wasting less food, cut emissions more than sourcing choices such as packaging or food miles. Small, repeated changes across the week beat occasional big ones.
Get electricity working for you
As the UK grid decarbonises, moving demand to electricity pays off over time. Efficient appliances, LED lighting, and — where the roof suits it — solar with a sensible tariff reduce both emissions and bills.
Reduce waste, then recycle the rest
Less general waste means less landfill methane. Composting food waste and repairing or rehoming items rather than replacing them has a bigger effect than sorting alone.
